About Dr Matthew Shears

Dr Matthew Shears completed his Medical Degree at the University of Melbourne through the Rural Clinical School. This is what first showed him the fantastic area of the Northeast of Victoria with a year spent in Benalla and Wangaratta. He developed an early passion for Rural Health and was the President of the Rural Health Students Society. This passion continued throughout his training.
Following Medical School, Dr Shears then completed his Internship and Resident years at Royal Melbourne Hospital with rotations twice back up to Northeast Health Wangaratta. He completed his General Surgical formal training through the Southwest Regional Hub in Victoria with rotations through all areas of General Surgery in Geelong, Ballarat and Colac. After completing this training, he then undertook a fellowship at University Hospital Geelong focusing on ERCP as well as minimally invasive gastro-intestinal surgery.
Dr Shears has trained under some incredible mentors who are world leaders and providing cutting edge new techniques in Surgery and is bringing this into his practice in the Northeast.
Since arriving in Wangaratta in 2021 Dr Shears has appointments at Northeast Health Wangaratta, Wangaratta Private Hospital, Alpine Health (Bright) and Mansfield District Health. He consults from Wangaratta, Bright and Mansfield.
Dr Shears also teaches Medical Students via the University of Melbourne Rural Clinical School based in Wangaratta. Since late 2021 he has been appointed as the Supervisor of Surgical Training for the SET Registrar’s in Wangaratta and sits on the Victorian/Tasmanian Training Committee for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Away from Surgery Dr Shears enjoys living in this wonderful part of the world with his wife, son and twin daughters. He loves exploring the mountains and rivers, camping and going to the snow.
